5 Ways Mobile Technology is Changing World Travel

Mobile technology is revolutionizing world travel. Never before have so many people owned a mobile phone. It is suggested that over 90% of US mobile users keep their device within arm's reach at all times.

The vast majority of the world population now owns a mobile phone. With an abundance of smartphones, mobiles have now taken over the humble television set. Forget teletext, smartphones do everything the television couldn't, let's find out why!

1. Simplicity is Key

In our current social climate, mobile technology makes travel arrangements as simple as tapping a few buttons on your phone. From hotels to resorts and sightseeing tours, almost every aspect of your holiday can be chosen and booked on your mobile! According to Expedia, over 65% of people who book a hotel room within 24 hours of checking in, and over 15% of travellers who book a flight 24 hours or less in advance, do so using their mobile. Even at the airport, three out of four smartphone users connect their devices to check anything from flight information to airport parking.

2. Mobile Internet Globally

Mobile Internet has quickly become the norm. No longer are smartphones solely for the elite, but a necessity for all. An infographic by My Destination predicts that by 2014, mobile internet usage shall surpass desktop internet usage. In fact, Google estimates 8% of mobile users will book travel from their device this year. Furthermore, a little over 50% of leisure travellers and 74% of first-class travellers own smart phones.

3. Social Media is Paramount

Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, remain highly influential in the promotion of world travel. For 78% of websites dedicated to business and leisure travel, social media is the biggest source of website traffic and sales. This shows that word-of-mouth recommendations from friends, family members and peers still matter just as much, if not more, in the age of mobile technology.

4. Travel Apps Aren't Just for the Techno Savvy

Mobile apps are perfect for everyone. As of January 2013, 38,750 (5%) of apps available for download or purchase were dedicated to travel planning, safety and management. Moreover, many companies are seeking traveller tracking through apps to significantly minimize their risks when booking. Advanced push notifications permit travellers to communicate needs promptly with colleagues or merchants without even sending a text message.

5. Alternative Accommodation

It is a growing trend for travellers worldwide to seek more authentic experiences such as shared accommodation in their desired location. Airbnb.com is becoming increasingly popular to connect travellers with home and apartment owners worldwide.

Research suggests that interest in Airbnb has increased 65% month over month since January 2011. In addition, high-end leisure travellers are joining clubs which provide access to luxury housing worldwide for their time away from the office.

In conclusion, mobile technology has transformed travel to suit our modern needs. Whether booking in advance or at the last minute, mobile booking helps take the stress out of travel, and therefore travelling has never been so convenient. Soon everyone will be connected and travel will become easier than ever, as the most sophisticated apps of today will become the way of tomorrow.
